HistoryCalifornia City Community Club HistoryA group of twenty California City residents founded the California City Community Club in 1959. The California City Pioneers, as they have become to be known, felt a need for direction and positive action for the new community they were a part of. They picked “4C’s” as the nickname for the Community Club. These Pioneers developed projects and organized people to assist the community in the most positive directions possible. They foresaw the needs and services, which would be required, as California City grew. The 4C’s saw a need for a community building where people could meet and discuss community projects for this growing City. They said, “Can do” and in November of 1960 the first town hall building was dedicated. It would house the Library and later the Volunteer Fire Department. The citizens of California City now could meet to discuss plans and community projects. The California City Community Club became known as the “Can Do” organization. This building became the storage building now used by the Community Club for rental income. The City needed a Fire Department to protect the residents in the budding community. The 4C’s put their organizing and promoting talents together and a Volunteer Fire Department was formed in late 1959, early 1960. Later, when the Kern County Fire Department was contracted and the new firehouse was built, they became the main work force. When the City needed some shade and beautification the 4C’s developed the tree-planting program. Their “Can do” attitude caused 100,000 trees to be planted in the city. As the City and population grew, again the Community Club saw a need and led the planning for local self-government. The 4C’s established the California City Chamber of Commerce to promote the idea of City Incorporation throughout the business community and residents. The Club arranged seminars and meetings to inform the residents of the benefits of self-government. They actively campaigned and promoted an incorporation drive, obtained signatures on petitions, and provided representatives to carry the petitions to the levels of government necessary to obtain Incorporation. When the citizens of California City voted to incorporate, the 4C’s introduced and promoted elections that established the first City Government Officials. After the City Government was established many of the Officers of the Community Club ran and held City Offices.Again the 4C’s felt things were needed for California City, so they started forming many of the community service clubs we have today. Many organizations were established with the backing of the Community Club. The Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts were looking for sponsors and the 4C’s were there. The Club has sponsored the Little League Divisions from their inception and continues to sponsor teams today. When the Youth Soccer League developed the 4C’s again stepped up to sponsor teams and became involved. The Community Club paid for fencing for Balsitis Park, the location of the first Soccer League games. When a need for a second Cub Scout Pack became known the Community Club became one of a few organizations nationwide to sponsor more than one Cub Scout Pack. When the California City Middle School created the “Howler Hero Award” the 4C’s were there to provide the financial support and continues today. The Community Club supported the two-day construction of the Sprague Building by funding the electrical fixtures. The 4C’s is an active member of the Economic Development Corporation’s California City Anniversary Committee and supports dances, swap meets and other activities celebrating the Anniversary of California City’s incorporation. Over the years the Community Club has sponsored pageants for Miss California City, Miss Teen California City and Junior Miss California City and since 1979 has sponsored the Little Miss California City Pageant. The Community Club was established as a non-political, non-denominational, non-discriminate, and non-profit organization. The Board of Directors and Officers volunteer their time and efforts to provide a positive attitude in support of California City and its continuing growth and development. The Club contributes much to the City’s youth and supports many organizations and activities. Each year the Club holds a Thanksgiving dinner in November and a spaghetti dinner in January for its members. The Club holds only one membership meeting a year, which is part of the spaghetti dinner in January. Members are asked from time to time to volunteer their support for Club functions and activities. As a member of this organization you can help continue the positive work started by the California City Pioneers and contribute to the continuing growth of our community |
